At the beginning of this week, Sean Payton sparked controversy in the NFL by criticizing former Denver Broncos head coach, Nathaniel Hackett, and taking a dig at the New York Jets for their “attempt to win the officiating.” During an interview with USA Today’s Jared Bell, Payton referred to Hackett’s tenure in Denver last year as possibly “one of the worst coaching jobs in NFL history.”
Sean Payton faced criticism not only from certain figures in the national media but also from the New York market, particularly Jets’ assertive lineman, Billy Turner (who was previously a Bronco), who strongly responded to the remarks back at Payton with an expletive-laden remark (Turner happens to be Hackett’s best friend). While Payton’s criticism was indeed true, it didn’t sit well with some people, including higher-ups in the Broncos’ GM George Paton’s and team’s executive offices, who were depicted in the same brush in 2022’s infamous disaster.
Payton also defended Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson from the allegations, mocking the notion that he has been brainwashed and is blaming his “parents,” suggesting the child is wandering through a direct and convoluted path to grant permission for being like this. However, since taking on the head coaching job in Denver, Payton has publicly shown the strongest defense for Wilson.
On Friday, during the first day of Broncos training camp, Payton was singing a different tune when he took the stage to talk to the media after practice.
Payton said, “I had one of those moments where I still had my fox topi (hat) and not my coaching topi. I told the team in the meeting yesterday: relatively, we had a fantastic officiating. I’m propagating that message, and here I am – experienced – stepping into it. It was a learning experience for me. Obviously, it was a mistake. I needed a little more filter.”
Payton alluded to the criticism and disrespect directed towards him, which stemmed from the repercussions of his mismanagement last year in Denver. It led to enduring the consequences as his new players in New York saw the broadcast of dirty laundry, resulting in tarnishing Hackett and the Jets, who are now aggressive coordinators with Aaron Rodgers under their guidance.
Payton said, “There’s a lot for these people, and as a coach, you’re prepared for them. After a while, we have moved beyond last year’s season. I said the same thing I had said before. I needed a little more restraint, and I regret it. As it is being said, what I told the team is – I think I’m very good at working with the media and quite sensible. I recently experienced one of those unforgettable moments.”
When asked if it would be smart to keep him in the public eye as emphasized by one of the main sports promotions in the nation, Payton offered further background for how he, to some extent, lost his vigilance and possibly disregarded the severity of his comments.
Jared [Bell], a correspondent for USA Today, is a terrific buddy and an excellent employee, according to Payton. “In the morning, I had two lattes. I see him first, and 40 minutes later I’m sorry I did. What is, is what is.
One interesting aspect of Payton’s frustration, as reported in USA Today, was how Broncos’ players were integrated into this official position as “anonymous donors,” staying away from the headlines, keeping a low profile, and simply “doing their job” with their consent. Since arriving at the Broncos headquarters, Payton has significantly reduced media access during the official’s tenure, making it challenging to cover the team.
In this way, Bell may perceive Payton’s comments as hypocritical, but everything he said was untrue. While there may be valid arguments on how the blockbuster official will unfold for the Jets, his opinion is valid. However, regarding the “stink” associated with 2022 Broncos and so many offenders, everything he said about it is true.
At the very least, Payton’s public conflicts have established a clear line of separation between the former administration and the present one. As the Payton era officially kicks off with training camp in Denver, maybe this will motivate the players and give the Broncos a little lift.
